Leaders of both major political parties favor protectionism, but I've read that about 85% of economists favor free trade, independent of their political ideologies. Politicians win elections by getting votes, not by telling the truth. Most voters are economically ignorant. They can be led to see the immediate benefits of some policy proposal without seeing its long-term costs. Bryan Caplan said something to the effect that economists propose policies that sound bad but are good; politicians propose policies that sound good but are bad.
